In 1970s Bastakia was still bustling with people and activity although many of the original inhabitants had moved out to newly developed parts of Deira.
Bastakiya’s narrow and intricate maze of walkways between its buildings were still desert sand, no tarmac, paving bricks or concrete to be seen anywhere. Nevertheless Bastakia was starting to deteriorate for want of maintenance and care.
Demolition of part of Bastakia hastened its decline.
By the time Chuck Dolci took his photographs Bastakia had become derelict.
