Dhows on Dubai Creek 1970-80s

Dubai Creek without Dhows is unimaginable.

Combination of Dubai Creek, Dhows and Dubai Traders is the basis of Dubai's growth and prosperity and a Tourist attraction.

But the unimaginable nearly happened.
In 2014, Plans were proposed to relocate Dhows from Dubai Creek to a new harbour being built on Deira Corniche.

Pollution was cited as a cause. Dubai Creek without Dhows would not be the same.

Plans change. Dubai Customs reported handling over 15,000 Dhows on Dubai Creek in 2018

Below is a photogallery about Dhows on Dubai Creek as they used to be in 1970s and 80s.

Dhow Wharfage Development Overview

Dhow Wharfage Development Project was launched in May 2012 by the Dubai Municipality to facilitate an increase in dhow trade through Dubai.

Project, now complete, involved constructing a comprehensive wharfage stretching 3km between the Deira Corniche and Palm Deira in front of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Development of the wharfage allows over 450 dhows to berth at the same time with 30 loading/unloading areas totalling 90,000 square metres

1.7 million tonnes of cargo are handled every year.

Wharfage has a depth of seven metres below low water level compared to five metres in Dubai Creek

Project included new quay structures and associated dredging and reclamation, support services, administrative and control buildings, sailors’ facilities and re-fuelling wharf.

Lighting network provides for the entire wharfage area to facilitate cargo handling work during the evening hours.

Construction required excavation and dredging of 390,000 cubic metres of seabed sand with dredged sand was re-used for reclamation for the new wharfage.
